TPACK
Description: This week’s prompt asked to address, in light of our pre-competencies verification, we are to reflect on our technology use as an educator, then identify areas of needed improvement.
Impact: Until I did this assignment, I felt that I was very techno-savvy in my classroom. I have lots of cool gadgets that I used to “wow” the new eighth graders when they come into my classroom. However, the standards made me realize that when it comes to using technology, it is quality not quantity of technology used. When I read the standards, there were a few that popped out at me that I knew that I was very strong. I thoroughly enjoy attending professional development conferences and learning new ideas to use in my classroom. However, I realized that this focus is primarily on using the TI Navigator. Although I feel it is very important for me to continue to learn on the Navigator system, I need to branch out to other forms of technology. I also realized that I need to teach my students more how to be more digitally responsible. This is an area that I never considered covering with my students. During this module, I decided to try different things in my classroom. I had never tried “United Streaming” in my classroom. I found a video that discussed the probability of an earthquake occurring in the mid-west. I felt this relevant in light of the Haiti earthquake.
Intent: In the very near future, I intend to incorporate available technology like United Streaming in my classroom. It is not only a valuable resource to introduce our children to other cultures or have them see how an unexpectedly an event like an earthquake can occur, it also gives relevance to the topic of discussion. Many times my students ask “when will I use this.” This will help me give them an answer.
